Traded in my suits and heels for leggings and Nike’s. And couldn’t be more happy!! I was a very successful commercial banker for almost eight years (that’s a whole ‘nother story) but have always been an athlete and found in the gym!
Mom started me in ballet and tap right after I took my first steps. And from there just continued. From jazz and dance, to cheerleading and gymnastics. And that’s where I spent most of my years. On the sidelines of the football field and on the blue bouncy competition mat.
Performing and competing were something I did for decades. So when I would see people stretching or doing yoga I couldn’t really make sense of it. I would always think (ignorantly of course) running is so much more efficient for working out!!!
THAT is FURTHEST from the truth.
Yoga and stretching, for me, have never been more important and helpful! Mentally, emotionally, physically, even spiritually. AND I just taught my first yoga class, and it was amazing. I love when students say “I never even knew we had some of those muscles and body parts.” We can get comfortable and get in habits very easily. But stretching classes and yoga keep our body’s moving and circulating. And keep our minds present and focused. Setting intentions and being grateful become more natural and evident.
So, when you’re tempted to leave class early without that stretch, or sleep in instead of going to Yoga, just remember the plethora of benefits from taking that extra time for yourself!
